Allergy Treatment In Houston, Texas

Allergies: When harmless substances become invaders

Our body’s immune system keeps us healthy by protecting us from foreign substances. In the case of allergies, our body mistakes harmless things as invaders. We call these substances allergens. They cause allergic reactions.

The most common allergens are food, pollen, mold, dust mites, animal dander, insect stings, medications, and latex. When these allergens come in contact with the body, the immune system overreacts. It produces an antibody that travels to different tissues. This antibody, called IgE, plays a role in the release of substances like histamine.

There are many symptoms of an allergic reaction. They may include runny nose, congestion, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, breathing difficulty, wheezing, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, swelling, hives. They can and even cause you to pass out or die. In the most serious cases, a life-threatening reaction called anaphylaxis can occur.

Genetic factors and one’s environment play a role in why some people suffer from allergies and others do not.

To figure out what you’re allergic to, your doctor will ask you questions. They look for clues in your lifestyle and environment. They will ask you about what you eat and your family history. They will ask about how often and how severe your symptoms are. They will also ask what you’ve done in the past to prevent or treat your allergies.

With proper treatment, people who suffer with allergies can live healthy and productive lives.
